If reading nutrition labels feels overwhelming, you are not alone.

People kept telling me they just gave up and bought whatever said things like “healthy,” “low-fat,” or “all natural.”

The problem is that marketing words do not tell you if a food will support or steal your energy.

Here is a simple step by step way to read any label through the lens:

“Will this support or drain my energy today?”

Step 1: Check sugar per serving

• Look at “Total Sugars” and “Added Sugars.”

• If it is high, especially in added sugars, that usually means a quick spike then an energy crash.

• Compare options on the shelf. Often there is a version with noticeably less sugar.

Step 2: Read the first three ingredients

• Ingredients are listed from most to least.

• If the first three are sugar forms, refined flour, or oils you do not recognize, that food is more likely to steal energy.

• If you see real foods early in the list, that is a better sign for steady energy.

Step 3: Scan for protein, fiber, and healthy fats

• Protein and fiber slow down how fast sugar hits your system.

• Some healthy fat helps you stay full and focused longer.

• Ask: Does this have at least one of these in a reasonable amount, or is it mostly carbs and sugar on their own?

Use this tiny checklist a few times and you start to feel more confident and in control at the store.

You are not chasing “perfect” food. You are choosing what actually supports your energy.
